Il se peut qu'il ne soit plus \u00e0 jour.<\/div><p>Trois jours g\u00e9niaux \u00e0 Paris Web viennent de s\u2019\u00e9couler\u00a0 riches de conf\u00e9rences g\u00e9niales, de rencontres qui l\u2019\u00e9taient tout autant et d\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.goetter.fr\/post\/33953678024\/mobile-first-quelques-tests-de-chargement\">exp\u00e9rimentations CSS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Je vais donc essayer de vous publier mes quelques notes prises durant ces trois jours, en anglais puisque c&rsquo;\u00e9tait la langue des trois conf\u00e9rences.<\/p>\n<h2>Responsive Web Design: Clever Tricks and Techniques<\/h2>\n<p>Je commence par la conf\u00e9rence de Vitaly Friedman\u00a0 de jeudi matin qui c&rsquo;est bas\u00e9 sur la refonte de Smashing Magazine<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus on the content choregraphy<\/li>\n<li>When they re-designed SmashingMagazine, they wanted an independent layout (independent from devices) =&gt; set breakpoints where the content breaks, and not according to device width\n<ul>\n<li>SVG and font-icon are great to serve a nice and sleek experience<\/li>\n<li>For images you can use conditional loading<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s a nice trick\/ hack to catch when media queries are fired, based on a\u00a0:before pseudo-class on the body <a href=\"http:\/\/adactio.com\/journal\/5429\/\">http:\/\/adactio.com\/journal\/5429\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Responsive video : ensure that the ratio is remained, create a box outside of the video, stretch the video inside the box<\/li>\n<li>Vertical media queries with the example of GoogleDrive, you can enhance behavior based on height too<\/li>\n<li>Use split mediaqueries and set breakpoints one pixel appart from one another (450, 451, etc)<\/li>\n<li>The 3 lines navicon icon becomes more and more used<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bradfrost.github.com\/this-is-responsive\/\">http:\/\/bradfrost.github.com\/this-is-responsive\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>RWD patterns : embed what can be done with mobile<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s left\u00a0? Current problems\u00a0: what to donc with webforms ? images ? perfoperformances ? consistency ? debuging? maintenance ?<\/li>\n<li>Casetyle\u00a0: typo in the new Smashing design\n<ul>\n<li>they started from scratch<\/li>\n<li>base and focused on typo?<\/li>\n<li>find out what makes mobile apps interresting<\/li>\n<li>45-90 character per line on all devices is a good measure for typography<\/li>\n<li>be carefull and test the fonts !!<\/li>\n<li>change layout when the line lenght was too long, put breakpoints when it makes sense<\/li>\n<li>So typo tips and tricks\u00a0:\n<ul>\n<li>Use a font-face that is 100% (16px) to start with<\/li>\n<li>line lenght\/ height = 27,8<\/li>\n<li>spacing\/ line height : 0.75<\/li>\n<li>use agh!iIl1 \u00a0\u00a0as a test phrase to test typography<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Question by the public: why did you not remove fonts for mobile to help loading and for performances?<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0: we could have, yes, \u00a0but we wanted a consistent style on all devices.<\/p>\n<h2>How Designers Destroyed the World<\/h2>\n<p>La seconde conf\u00e9rence o\u00f9 j\u2019ai pris beaucoup de notes est celle de Mike Monteiro auteur de \u00abDesign is a Job\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Let\u2019s make mistakes\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creation without responsibility is destruction<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10000872396390444165804578008740578200224.html\">Facebook bad design decisions outed an homosexual student<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>someone can ad you to a group without your agreement<\/li>\n<li>groups settings overwrite personal settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It can destroy a life with bad decisions, even if it was a design decision: \/<\/li>\n<li>\u201cit\u2019s good enough\u201d equals not very good at all !!!<\/li>\n<li>design is <strong>how it affects <\/strong>people and the environment they are in<\/li>\n<li>careless design is not creation, it\u2019s destruction<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Design-For-The-Real-World\/dp\/0897331532\">Design for the real world<\/a>\u201d =&gt; a book you should read<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere are professions more harmful than design, but only a very few of them\u201d<\/li>\n<li>4 responsibilities\n<ul>\n<li>Responsible to the world: you are in the service of a better world. Make sure you are solving problems, and not creating them. Are the problems you are solving worth solving?<\/li>\n<li>To the craft: each job you do is a representation to the entire craft, if you do bad designs, you are giving a bad image of the whole craft. Other designers will have to rebuild the trust of people that have been screwed by other bad designers. Write, speak, teach!<\/li>\n<li>To the clients\n<ul>\n<li>chose the right clients<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t work to anybody you\u2019re afraid to say no to<\/li>\n<li>say no, you\u2019re hire to make good design, not to make clients happy !<\/li>\n<li>when there is a terrible idea, say it !!<\/li>\n<li>be willing to get fired !!<\/li>\n<li>no client hires you to be their friend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>To yourself\n<ul>\n<li>the work we choose to take on defines us<\/li>\n<li>you\u2019re portfolio reflects your work<\/li>\n<li>portfolio is another word for your reputation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>when you start to say no, the client understands<\/li>\n<li>when you turn on a bad job, a better one will come<\/li>\n<li>Things do detroy\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0your ego : you are not bigger than the problem you solve<\/li>\n<li>your fear : never trust a designer how has never been punched in a face<\/li>\n<li>your apathy : be an active designer, be intentional in your actions<\/li>\n<li>the art director hovering over your shoulder<\/li>\n<li>the voice inside that says \u201cdon\u2019t get in trouble\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Wake up, we need our best designers at Facebook to stop them doing bad things<\/li>\n<li>Even if you work for the most evil company in the world, decide if it\u2019s ok to have your name on it (ethical)<\/li>\n<li>designers NEED to change the world : open, equal, more accessible web<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Advanced Typesetting for Web<\/h2>\n<p>La conf\u00e9rence de Marko Dugonji\u0107 sur le choix d\u2019une typo<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maratz.com\/blog\/archives\/2012\/07\/26\/article-readability-stats-with-php\/\">http:\/\/www.maratz.com\/blog\/archives\/2012\/07\/26\/article-readability-stats-with-php\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How to chose a typeface\u00a0?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>put text into context\n<ul>\n<li>is it used into grids ? columns?<\/li>\n<li>what is the the peripheric\u00a0 it will be displayed on?<\/li>\n<li>different length of some common words (ex translation for german maybe you\u2019ll need a special typeface)<\/li>\n<li>disabled people: dyslexic people, color blind who can\u2019t rely on font smoothing, it won\u2019t work !!<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0impatience of people \u00a0sometimes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Choosing a typeface<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>start with body copy<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.type-together.com\/\">http:\/\/www.type-together.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>serif or not ?\n<ul>\n<li>for something that should be vertical compared : use a not horizontal pronounced typeface<\/li>\n<li>for online book : serif typeface<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u201caegh!iIl1\u201d to test glyphs in the font. If a and e are too similar, people will have problems reading it<\/li>\n<li>check out \u00a0cleartype and not : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lucasfonts.com\/\">lucasfonts.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li>check on many devices to make sure it looks nice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Combining typeface<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>mesure the x-height of your different fonts<\/li>\n<li>create contrast, not just in color, with boldness for example too<\/li>\n<li>\u201cdesigners like even grayness which is the worst for reader\u201d<\/li>\n<li>typeface from the same foundry often work well together<\/li>\n<li>using two extra bolds typeface together : No !!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Type size<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>different distances from eye to screen : desktop, mobile<\/li>\n<li>measure typo and compare it with a real book to see if it\u2019s readable<\/li>\n<li>16px : you can go further !<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Words<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beware about kerning<\/li>\n<li>In CSS\u00a0: text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Line lenght<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fixation point : our brain jumps ahead to next expected work<\/li>\n<li>100 characters per line : the biggest we can read, 70 given to typographers<\/li>\n<li>for factual information, the reading is quick you can tighten the line<\/li>\n<li>for novel reading: make it longer, people read slowly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Headlines<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>big massive headlines on destktop but on mobile device this sucks.
