Pixels of the Week – January 23, 2022

Every day, I share on Twitter and LinkedIn a list of curated articles I read, resources and tools about UX Design, User Research, UI and mobile design, HTML, CSS, the web industry, some process, some inspiration, etc. This is an archive of everything I shared this week.

#Now – what I’m up to

I’m currently revamping a lot of the content of my teaching class for students to make it more actionable and digestable. This takes a lot of time but once this is done, I’ll have a good base for workshops. So, yeahy. I’m also preparing for my meetup on Enterprise UX next week. This should be fun.

TL;DNR the one you should not miss

#User Research

An interesting matrix to help you prioritize user research, because you don’t have time to do research for every single feature .

Interesting article

#Enterprise UX

How I Survived Business Complexity” a great article by Quentin Langelier describing how to design for the complexity of some businesses without getting overwhelmed. The part about ignorance providing benefits is really important for me.

Six things to consider before changing fonts on a website” by @glyphe. I want to change the font on my, but I’m stuck on point 5. I don’t want to change all my visual artifacts (PDFs, conference slides, etc.) Also, 3, check the license, YES

#UX Career Switch

Switching Careers to UX Design by @uxtoolsco, some interesting advice in here. I agree that switching within your current company can help a lot. I’m not a big fan of Bootcamps though, but the tips on finding good ones are interesting.

Simple Sabotage Field Manual – How to Destroy Your Organizations” a read for my chaotic friends. But also: if you know how to sabotage, you might find ways to avoid it ^^

10 Ways Disneyland Used Psychology to Perfect Its Experience” I wonder if all of those principles are still applied today. I like “keep it up” & the fact that you don’t only have to build an experience but maintain it, it gets often forgotten

The articles describes what counts as a WCAG failure when it comes to labels

Who’s hijacked our minds on LinkedIn? A critical thinking approach to identifying how we fall prey to the psychologically exploitative strategies being used by some content creators on LinkedIn and other social media

Useful tools and resources that will make your life easy

  • If you check the background of my site, you will see some CSS dots. I coded those by hand, but if you need help, here is a nice polka dot generator
  • I haven’t used gradients in a while on a website, but I still love @joshwcomeau’s gradient generator that lets you chose different color modes for more beautiful results.

#Animated Backgrounds

Vanta.js lets you add background animations to a websites in a few lines of code. I like the idea, but, be careful as those might be an issues for some of your users (aka offer a way to pause, use prefers-reduced-motion, etc.)

You know those cool websites with particle demos that all have the nice little panels on the side to fine tune options? Here’s a library that provides such a panel for your projects
